Right you are about Hector, and I have to say that personally I've always liked the guy. Hard to believe his money has caused so much resentment and been so problematic to Zihuatanejo and its residents, though he did get our beloved Owen Lee out of a jam when he needed help, and for his trouble now he owns the Las Gatas Beach Club (yep, Owen finally sold out and has moved on).

To me Villa Vera will always represent the first truly ugly construction on a large scale in Zihuatanejo, not counting the obliteration of the lagoon that was converted into Canal La Boquita. Sitting at Rossy's with my friends in early 1990 when they blasted away an ugly scar on the hillside appeared to be the first and most visible real attack on Zihuatanejo's natural beauty, and since we spent almost every afternoon at Rossy's hoisting mezcal at sunsets, we watched that nasty wound of a scar fester until the building was complete. (Phil, weren't you there on many of those days?) We simply could not believe that anyone could build something so out-of-place and butt-ugly in such a beautiful place as Zihuatanejo. Obviously the beauty of Zihuatanejo didn't inspire them, only its potential money did.

But yeah, I guess you're right. Intrawest probably wins the butt-ugly contest nowadays. I still can't bring myself to use any photo of La Ropa on my website or those of any of my clients where Intrawest is visible. Just like I refuse to even take a photo of the bay showing that awful floating discoteque "Dancer". Where's a good hurricane when you need one? ;~)
